Improbable

Of all the possible universes
Of all the possible galaxies
Of all the possible planets

Of all the possible homes for life
Of all the possible life-giving conditions
Of all the possible life giving

Of all the possible life forms
Of all the possible lifetimes
Of all the possible lives, past, present, and ever

Our very lives just are just
Improbable

Species evolving and extinguished
Races emerging and withering
Ancestries traveling through eons

The power of lineages
The roots of traditions
The families shaping who we are

Teachers, Cultures, Creeds
Showing us possibilities
Setting us on our paths

Our journeys meeting is just
Improbable

Through the ebbs and flows
Hardship and prosperity
Disease and health

Vibrance and dullness
Slumber and wakefulness
Work and rest

Passions and despair
Depression and joy
Anxiety and calm

Our being for one another is just
Improbable

Perhaps there are many like it
Perhaps it’s not remarkable
Perhaps many have made the invitation

Hardly the only camaraderie
Hardly the only companionship
Hardly the only anything

But it’s ours
And we have but fleeting moments
And its worth is beyond riches

This friendship of ours is so
Improbable

And as warmth dissipates into death
As shared memories yield to oblivion
As our story gets buried in the dust of time

As time itself rips into nothingness
An essence of ours eternally endures
Defying death and annihilation

Defying the very boundaries of space and time
Or at least I’d like to think so
Yeah, I know what you’re thinking

That’s just too
Improbable
